Water spray, rain and dusty surroundings are part of everyday field work. HYDRIQ has undergone water-spray testing as part of our work towards a minimum IP65 enclosure protection rating — another step in developing equipment for demanding operating environments.
Precision measurement meets real-world conditions
HYDRIQ measures flow and pressure for testing fire hydrants, wet risers and firefighting pumps. These operations take place around water, often outdoors, where the instrument’s enclosure matters as much as the technology inside it.
At Redium Dynamics, our aim is to bring measurement, connected workflows and practical durability together. The enclosure must help protect the electronics while operators concentrate on their inspection, measurements and reports.
Watch HYDRIQ under water spray
The footage shows water directed onto the enclosure from different angles, including the front display area and the sides. It offers a close look at the conditions the housing faces during this stage of testing.
What does IP65 mean?
The IP code, defined by IEC 60529, describes an enclosure’s protection against the ingress of solid particles and water. Its two digits refer to separate assessments:
- The first 6 — dust-tight protection: no dust ingress is permitted during the IP6X test. This is the dust-tight classification under IEC 60529.
- The second 5 — water-jet protection: water projected against the enclosure from any direction must not cause harmful effects.
How is water-jet protection tested?
The standard IPX5 method uses a 6.3 mm nozzle delivering 12.5 litres per minute, with a ±5% tolerance. Water is applied from all practicable directions at a distance of 2.5 to 3 metres. Exposure is one minute per square metre of the enclosure surface being tested, with a minimum duration of three minutes. The enclosure is then inspected to assess any ingress and its effect on the equipment. IPX5 water-jet test procedure.
How is dust-tightness tested?
The IP6X assessment is carried out separately in a sealed chamber, with fine talcum powder kept in suspension. Controlled suction challenges the enclosure’s seals as part of the prescribed test procedure. After exposure, the enclosure is inspected: no dust ingress is permitted. This separate assessment is required for the first digit of IP65; it is not demonstrated by the water-spray footage alone. IEC 60529 IP65 dust and water test methods.
Developed for daily use in demanding environments
The objective is practical: help operators carry out their work with equipment designed for the conditions surrounding hydrant and firefighting-pump testing. Rain, spray and dust are part of that design brief.
IP65 is the minimum protection level targeted by this test programme. The final declared rating will be based on the completed assessments and documented results. At Redium Dynamics, this work is part of a wider ambition: to combine precise measurement with equipment built for the realities of the field.
